Public art is very hard to get right. It must add to the environment, engage the casual user and hopefully provoke thought and (hopefully) apprehension of beauty.

The Cone of Light does all of these things. It is terrific. It’s clever, aesthetically pleasing and encourages people (and children to engage with it). And, when one looks the other way, back over it to the sea on a sunny day, it captures and reflects the blue sky and clouds beautifully.

I am a native of Newcastle. This folly has been referred to by the name “Cone of Light” because if you look through the space in between your eyes will be drawn to the top of Donard mountain. I have lived here for a long time and I don’t need a folly to make me look up to one of the most beautiful sights in the world. Donard mountain is worthy of five stars in my rating. The ‘Cone of Light’ a zero rating for rate payers.
