Widow’s Row is a line of cottages that were built in King Street for the Widow’s of the fishing disaster of 1843. On Friday 13th of January ten fishing boats set sail from Newcastle, a storm ensued and seventy three fishermen were drowned.

Forty six Newcastle fishermen were drowned leaving behind 27 widows, 118 orphans and 21 dependants. An appeal raised enough money to build twelve small cottages at King Street that is still known as Widow’s Row.

My aunt bought one of these cottages in the late 1950s the place holds magical memories for me we spent many holidays there growing up. In the mornings we woke up with a view of the harbour and sea looking towards ST Johns point lighthouse by the cottage half door.
